We have not every year a month of May with three extra days off.

Okay, it's not nice for the children who are in hollidays and would prefer to use these day off...
Why an extra day off?
_ Because Thursday is off and it would be silly to come back to work between a Thursday off and a week-end.
_ But why is this Thursday free?
_ A few years ago I wrote an very good post about this, but I can't refind it so here is the main idea: a lot of workers stopped to worked on May 1st to ask for a 8 hours day and the police killed them. The first May 1st off will take place in 1899 in Paris to commemorate this. Then the Second International will decrete this commemoration to be annual since 1891... and another gun game from policemen on workers (you imagine how financial decision-makers accused them to ruin the firms and threats corporate relocation?).
That's why we commemorate on First of May, murdered workers because they were demanding better working conditions with less working hours per day.Why an extra day off?

* : In French we call a "pont" (litteraly a bridge) the extra day off between a Thursday off and a week-end.
