Serbs are mentioned by Pliny and Ptolemy (2nd Century).
After the Ottoman occupation (14th - 19th Cent.) it was a principality, grown to be a kingdom in 1882. We know that a Serbian anarchist assassinated Ferdinand-Franz Archiduke, starting WWI.
After WWI the kingdom was still developping as to become Yugoslavia, an authoritarian monarchy. WWII (in which Yugoslavia was neutral, then the Regent has to sign a pact with the Axis but Germany invaded the country) ends the kingdom.
Start the communist period with Marshal Tito (underground communists war chief). Yugoslavia will never be a member of Warsaw Pact (the management of properties is not centralized by the state but is left to the employees) and founded the Non-Aligned Movement with Nehru and Nasser.
During 70's separatist were more powerful. Regions like Kosovo and Vojvodina accessed a federal representation. After Tito's death the presidency is held in turn by each republic til the break of 90's (the opposition won elections in Slovenia, Croatia and Bosina & Herzegovina) and the conflicts under president Milosevic.
Vojvodina has still its government but does not ask for independance.
Kosovo is still occupied by KFOR. It has been recognized by some countries (including France) but the case remains unresolved in the UN.
French Ministry for Foreign Affairs stresses about danger in this sector, yet undermined.
That may be why we didn't found a car-rent leaving us vehicles for Serbia? Except this part, the country lives in peace.
